The New Round of 32 Explained

The inclusion of the Round of 32 is the most notable structural change for the 2026 tournament. In previous 32-team World Cups, the knockout phase began with 16 teams. By expanding the field to 48 teams, FIFA added an entire extra round of single-elimination matches. This change significantly increases the stakes of the group stage, as 32 teams now survive the opening round instead of 16. For fans and players, this means one extra "win or go home" match on the road to the trophy. The Round of 32 features the 24 teams that finished first and second in their groups, plus the eight highest-ranked teams that finished third. This round is played over six days from 28 June to 3 July across multiple host cities including Los Angeles, Dallas, and Mexico City. It provides a massive early spike in tournament intensity, as the field is halved in less than a week.
