The Estadio Azteca in Mexico City has hosted two World Cup finals and will now host a Round of 32 elimination match between the Group A winner and a third-place qualifier. At 2,200 metres above sea level, the Azteca imposes its own rules. Balls fly further and faster in the thin air, passes arrive a half-beat earlier than expected, and players unacclimatised to altitude feel the deficit in their lungs after 60 minutes. The group winner, having already played here, holds that advantage.
The Azteca crowd is among the most passionate in world football, and a knockout match raises the intensity another order of magnitude. For the third-place side arriving into this altitude, the first 20 minutes are about survival: staying compact, avoiding the early sucker-punch that the thin air and the crowd noise conspire to produce. If they survive that window, the match opens up, and anything becomes possible in the most storied stadium the tournament possesses.
