The final whistle in Group F may well sound over this match, and by then the permutations could render it a dead rubber or a knockout contest played under a different name. Japan and Sweden have a curiously thin history on the men's side — friendlies in 2017 and 2021 produced a 1-0 Swedish win and a 2-1 Japanese victory respectively — but the fixture has acquired an edge through shared proximity: both teams occupy the tier just below the tournament's genuine contenders, and both know that escaping this group positions them for a deep run. Moriyasu versus Tomasson is a meeting of modern pragmatists.

Japan will attempt to control possession with Takefusa Kubo's dribbling and Ritsu Doan's industry, while Sweden's game plan is almost certainly Isak versus Japan's high defensive line. If Endo cannot track Kulusevski's drifts inside, Sweden will generate the kind of chances that Isak converts in his sleep. If Japan's press forces turnovers in dangerous areas, Sweden's back four will face a kind of pressure they rarely encounter in Scandinavian qualifying. Tournament football at its most evenly matched: the margin between progression and elimination might be a single deflection, a single misjudgment, a single moment of coolness when the stakes are highest.
