Hakan Çalhanoğlu — Türkiye World Cup 2026 Squad
Midfielder
Türkiye UEFA Club: Inter Milan
Career Highlights
Hakan Calhanoglu has scored 18 direct free-kicks in Europe top five leagues since 2013 — more than any other player in that period. He converted 94.3 percent of his passes in the 2023-24 Serie A season, the highest rate of any midfielder in the league. He won the Serie A title with Inter Milan in 2021-22, his first season after crossing the Milan divide. He has scored 18 goals in 98 caps for Turkey, many from free-kicks and long-range strikes. He was named Inter Milan Player of the Season in 2023-24 after registering 13 goals and 8 assists across all competitions.
Club Career
Calhanoglu came through Karlsruher and Hamburg before joining Bayer Leverkusen for €14.5 million in 2014. At Leverkusen he scored 28 goals in 115 appearances and earned a reputation as one of the Bundesliga best set-piece takers. AC Milan signed him for €23 million in 2017 and he spent four seasons at San Siro, scoring 32 goals. His move to Inter Milan in 2021 — on a free transfer — was controversial among Milan fans. At Inter under Simone Inzaghi he transformed from an attacking midfielder into a deep-lying playmaker, taking over the regista role from Marcelo Brozovic. His 2023-24 season produced 13 goals and 8 assists, and he started 36 of 38 league matches.
International Career & World Cup History
Calhanoglu debuted for Turkey at 19 against Andorra in 2013. He was part of Turkey Euro 2016 squad but made only one substitute appearance. At Euro 2020 he scored a long-range goal against Switzerland in Turkey only positive match of a disappointing group stage. Turkey did not qualify for the 2018 or 2022 World Cups. In Euro 2024 qualifying he captained Turkey to qualification, scoring 3 goals including a free-kick against Armenia. His 98 caps make him one of Turkey most experienced active players.
World Cup 2026 Outlook
Calhanoglu at 31 will be Turkey primary creative force at their first World Cup since 2002. His role as regista — receiving from the centre-backs, switching play, and threatening from distance — is exactly what Turkey need against opponents who will sit deep. The free-kick threat alone forces defenders to avoid fouls within 30 metres, altering how opponents defend. The concern is his physical durability over a tournament: he played 50 matches for Inter in 2023-24 and occasionally looked fatigued in the final weeks. If Turkey are to escape the group, Calhanoglu needs to be at his most precise, finding Orkun Kokcu and Cengiz Under with passes that break the opposition shape.
