Luis Díaz — Colombia World Cup 2026 Squad
Forward
Colombia CONMEBOL Club: Liverpool
Career Highlights
Luis Diaz scored 4 goals at the 2024 Copa America to win the Golden Boot, leading Colombia to their first final since 2001. In the final against Argentina he hit the post in extra time before Colombia lost 1-0. He scored both goals in Liverpool 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the 2022 Champions League quarter-final first leg. His dribbling success rate of 62 percent in the 2023-24 Premier League ranked third among all players with at least 80 attempts, behind only Vinicius Junior and Jeremy Doku. At Porto he was named Portuguese League Player of the Year in 2021 after scoring 14 league goals and leading the league in dribbles completed.
Club Career
Diaz began at Barranquilla in the Colombian second division before moving to Junior, where he scored 21 goals in 79 appearances. Porto signed him for €7.2 million in 2019 and his output escalated dramatically — 9, 11, then 14 league goals in successive seasons, plus a hat-trick against Monaco in the 2020-21 Champions League group stage. Liverpool paid an initial €47 million in January 2022 to beat Tottenham to his signature. He scored 8 goals in his first 13 Premier League matches and won the FA Cup that season, scoring in the semi-final against Manchester City. Persistent knee injuries in 2022-23 limited him to 17 league starts. He recovered to score 13 Premier League goals in 2023-24. Bayern Munich paid €65 million in 2025, reuniting him with Vincent Kompany aggressive attacking system.
International Career & World Cup History
Diaz debuted for Colombia at 22 against Argentina in 2018 and became a starter under Carlos Queiroz. At the 2019 Copa America he scored against Chile in the quarter-finals. The 2021 Copa America on Brazilian soil saw him score 4 goals, including a consolation in the third-place playoff, and win the Golden Boot alongside Lionel Messi. Colombia did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup, losing to Peru in the intercontinental playoff. At the 2024 Copa America he was devastating, scoring against Paraguay, Costa Rica, Panama, and Uruguay before the final. His 20 goals in 62 caps have come predominantly from the left wing.
World Cup 2026 Outlook
Diaz at 29 is in his physical prime and enters the tournament with more experience of top-level European football than ever before. Bayern Munich intensity will sharpen his conditioning. The tactical question for Nestor Lorenzo is whether to play Diaz on the left with James Rodriguez inside, or to flip him to the right to stretch the pitch differently. Diaz prefers the left, cutting inside on his right foot, but against deep blocks that space is often congested. If Colombia are to reach a World Cup semi-final for the first time, Diaz needs to produce the same one-on-one dominance he showed at the 2024 Copa America. His partnership with James — Diaz making the runs, James playing the passes — is Colombia most dangerous combination.
