Egypt — World Cup 2026 Squad & Fixtures

Egypt have appeared at three World Cups, 1934, 1990, and 2018, and have never advanced past the group stage. The 2018 campaign was built around Mohamed Salah but ended with three defeats, including a late 1-0 loss to Uruguay in the opener that set a tone they could not reverse. The 1990 tournament in Italy produced a draw against the Netherlands and two defeats, while 1934 was a single elimination match lost 4-2 to Hungary. Despite seven AFCON titles, the most in African football, Egypt's World Cup record remains the most conspicuous gap in their decorated history.

Egypt qualified through the CAF playoff pathway, winning a group that included Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissar before a decisive playoff victory. The campaign was smoother than recent qualifying cycles, where Egypt often relied on Salah's individual moments to compensate for structural weaknesses. Rui Vitória's arrival as manager brought a more organised defensive shape and a midfield that could progress the ball without requiring Salah to drop deep. Direct qualification was secured with matches to spare.

Egypt's challenge is the same one they have failed to solve in three previous World Cups: translating AFCON dominance into World Cup results. Group G pairs them with Curaçao, Japan, and Austria, Japan will test Egypt's defensive shape, Austria will test their ability to play through a press, and Curaçao offers the best chance for points. Advancing from the group for the first time would require Egypt to take something from at least one of the established sides, something they have never managed before.

Mohamed Salah cuts inside from the right wing and finishes with a consistency that has made him Egypt's all-time leading scorer: his acceleration past the outside shoulder of defenders creates the space for shots that goalkeepers rarely reach.
