There is something wonderfully incongruous about this fixture. Uruguay, twice World Cup winners, a nation of 3.4 million that has punched above its weight for a century, sharing a pitch with Cabo Verde — a volcanic archipelago of roughly 600,000 people contesting its first World Cup. There is no competitive head-to-head to reference, no shared qualifying path, no historical grudge to embellish. What Cabo Verde lack in pedigree they compensate in fearlessness. Players like Kenny Rocha dos Santos and Garry Rodrigues have spent careers being underestimated, and that chip translates into performances of genuine quality when the spotlight arrives. Ryan Mendes, drifting inside from the left, has the technical ability to trouble any defence on his day.

Uruguay will not care about the romance. La Celeste approach every match as a problem to be solved with intensity and verticality. Federico Valverde's midfield dominance, Núñez's manic pressing, and Araújo's defensive authority make Uruguay a nightmarish proposition for debutants still finding their feet at this level.

Cabo Verde's only viable approach is to slow the game down — deny Uruguay the frenetic tempo they crave, make Valverde play sideways rather than forward, and hope Vozinha in goal can reproduce the shot-stopping heroics that kept the Blue Sharks in qualifying matches they had no business surviving. It is a tall order. But this tournament has already shown that tall orders are sometimes filled.
